Ki Purbo Asmoro
Singapore, March 2006
In March 2006, Ki Purbo Asmoro was invited to be in residence at the Singapore Art Museum for a week, rehearsing and performing. He rehearsed for 3 intense days with the local gamelan group known as Singalaras, directed by Jan Mrazek, and then performed a two-hour padhat lakon "Ramayana" on Friday and a two-hour padhat version of Ciptoning on Saturday. Both performances were simultaneously translated into English by Kitsie Emerson. Bp. Wakidi Dwidjomartono led rehearsals with the group for a few weeks before Ki Purbo's arrival. Bp. Supardi, ISI, also happened to be in Singapore at the time and was able to spend some time touring around town with all of us.
The Singapore audiences were exceptionally enthusiastic about the performances. There was a strong Indian attendance, by many who already had a deep understanding of the epics being portrayed. This led to a lively question and answer session after the performance.
