MINGGU PAINGAN at the home of Ki Purbo AsmoroGebang, Kadipiro, Solo
Sometime in 2010, Ki Purbo Asmoro came up with the idea that he wanted to support a monthly wayang event at his home. This event would serve a number of purposes:
1. To show his support for the many members of his gamelan troupe, Mayangkara who are dhalang, by offering them a performing venue. And it's true that in fact a very large proportion of Mayangkara are also profesional-level dhalang, but have for various reasons decided to perform in his troupe rather than to pursue their own exclusive performing career.
2. To offer a free wayang event at his house once a month, to be enjoyed by the local community.
3. To celebrate a stage in his life in which he wants to give back to the community, and feels his house/gamelan/kelir/and wayang collection should be enjoyed by all as much as possible throughout a single month
Hence he decided to hold a monthly event in which he alternates dhalang--one month a member of Mayangkara, and the next month a dhalang from outside the Mayangkara community, and so on. Every single month would feature Mayangkara musicians.
Since Ki Purbo Asmoro's wetonan (monthly birthday by the Javanese calendar) falls on MINGGU PAING, he wanted to hold it then, and since Saturday night is a busy night for everyone, decided to hold it on MINGGU PAING MALAM (Sunday night, Paing).
So far, the events have been attended by members of the ISI Pedalangan Dept, PADHASUKA (a Solonese dhalang association), as well as members of the Yogya, Klaten, Semarang, and Jakarta artistic communities; not to mention large number of foreign gamelan and wayang students.
The event proceeds as follows each month:
20:45-21:15, some sort of dance opener
21:15-01:00, Wayang Kulit Purwa, ringkas (stops at 01:00, so it's a shortened wayang)
